The College Remedial Coursework report shows the number of Michigan public high school graduates who took at least one remedial course after enrolling in a Michigan college or university the year after high school graduation. It also shows how remedial coursework enrollment has been trending from year to year.
For this report, CEPI compared the list of students who earned a diploma (or otherwise completed high school requirements) with Michigan college enrollment data for the following year. Any graduate who enrolled in a college or university that submits to the Student Transcript and Academic Record Repository Collection the following year is counted.
Remedial coursework is identified by the college or university, and includes math, reading, writing or science courses in which most of the course content should have been learned by the end of high school. If a student took a remedial course, it’s included in the remedial course counts.

- In 2013-14, data collection for postsecondary institutions was modified to improve reporting of remedial coursework. In the past, CEPI only searched for remedial coursework taken at the first postsecondary institution a student attended; this restriction was removed. Additionally, previous iterations looked 16 months beyond high school graduation; the standard is now 12 months. As a result, reports generated prior to 2014 may have slightly different numbers than reports generated today.
- Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, independent colleges with TIP or PELL grant recipients began reporting in the STARR Collection. Because of this change, independent colleges may be more frequently represented in the data than in prior years, which may result in trend changes.
Use the Location and Report Settings to select a location, high school graduation year, college type, subject and report category. Data can be filtered by categories such as race/ethnicity, gender, economically disadvantaged, English learners, homeless, migrant, and students with disabilities.

- Trend (a graph and table showing changes over time)
- Entity Breakdown (a table shows the data for the selected entity and related entities; if you’ve selected a particular district, the Entity Breakdown would show data for that district, ISD and individual buildings within the district)

Users with secure access who are logged in can see unsuppressed numbers for the entities for which they have been specifically authorized.
The Center for Educational Performance and Information collects the data from the Student Transcript and Academic Record Repository Collection and other Michigan Student Data System collections. The report includes only Michigan public high school graduates who enrolled in a Michigan 2-year college or 4-year college or university. Undergraduate students are included from all Michigan public colleges and universities and many independent postsecondary institutions, regardless of degree-seeking or non-degree-seeking status, full-time or part-time status, age, or residence.
Demographic categories are based on high school status. For example, if a student was reported as economically disadvantaged or of a certain race/ethnicity while in high school, those demographics are reflected in the report.
The data are collected from high schools, including charter schools, after the high school year closes, and matched against college enrollments for the following year. For example, the high school class of 2009-10 was captured in the 2010-11 college school year and reflected in the report released by CEPI in 2011.
The sum of counts from a specific College Type or Subject may result in a higher total number than counts reflected in College Type (All) and Subject (All), because students may have enrolled in more than one college or taken more than one remedial course.

To protect the privacy of individual students, CEPI applies data suppression rules to sensitive data when report settings would yield fewer than 10 students in a given group. Complementary groups may also be suppressed. In some cases, values less than 10 may be shown when there is no risk of identifying individual students.
